About this class

Robotic Science  is designed for students to express their creativity while exploring the world of engineering. Our goal is for students to have a fun experience with building robots and machines that do wacky and silly things!  We leave the creative choices in their own hands while they learn to construct.  This will allow students to be proud of their accomplishments and leave excited and inspired.  We foster an environment for students to release a lot of energy through movement and play.  At the end of the lesson, students are excited to tell others what they have learned, and they want to learn more about the world of robotics.

Each class will focus on a different style of robotics.  Lessons will be broken up into activities that are kinesthetic, visual, and auditory.   The games and activities we play will teach and inspire a new type of creation based on a function we are looking for.  We will create robots that color, robots that do tasks for us, robots that move items from one location to another, and virtual AI robots that will complete computer tasks.  Using the various materials and resources, students will create various masterpieces based on their own creativity and imagination.

A typical class would begin with a warm up activity.  This activity will relate to something we want to improve in our lives.  For example, if we are working on the idea of cleaning, we may brainstorm a list of ideas of what we could have a robot do to make cleaning easier.  For example, we may decide that we want a robot to pick up toys.  As a class, we would talk about developing a reasonable prototype.  A human-like robot that would go around picking up toys and putting them where they belong may not be a realistic achievement for a class, but we could create something that would sweep toys into a bin.  We would then move into a silly game that fits the theme of the week.  Finally, we would focus the remainder of our class on building a robot that would do a specific class.  These will be motivation to more students could do at home.
