History mysteries is a class for students to part of a murder mystery each week... but without the death. Each week students will step into the shoes of characters from the past and figure out who did it! I may even have been them. Our goal is for students to walk away with an excitement and interest in history. This class allows students to release a lot of energy through movement and play while learning about history. At the end of the lesson they are excited to tell others what they have learned, and they want to know more about the world of the people and places they have discovered.
A typical class would begin with a headband name card. Students will not see who they are at first, but they will be able to see who others are. They can discuss any background knowledge they may know about the people they see and guess which place in time we are visiting that day. Then, a huge dramatic event happens! Someone may have stollen everyone's treasure! Someone may be secretly working against the team! Or someone may just have accidentally eaten the last dessert! The students will then follow clues in pairs or groups. A clue may be an encrypted message. It may be a letter from the past. It may be a copy of a new law. Slowly they will cross people off the list until they figure out who has done it. If students figure out who is the perpetrator, they will win a prize to take home. The teacher will both during and after teach about these real people and discuss why they made choices they did in real historical context.
